Sports promoting peace and reconciliation in Yei: official
Football activities in Yei River State have created an environment in which local communities come together to work for peace building, an official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the Secretary General of the Yei Local Football Association, Gabriel Moro said sports have promoted peaceful co-existence among young people in the state.
“We came to know that through sports, people are returning from Uganda and villages into town. We have also seen that through sports, there are good military-civil relations, peace, reconciliation and togetherness,” he explained.
Moro urged the state government and its partners to support sports activities to promote development after years of civil war.
“Football is one of the activities that bring youth together. With support, the youth will always speak the language of peace and unity,” Moro said.
He added, “If you look at our sports clubs in Yei, you find that they have players from the Nuer, Dinka, Acholi and Kakwa ethnic groups and they play for peace as one people”.
Rinah Sunday, a football fan, said she manages her stress and trauma through engagement in various sports activities.
